SummerFun Classes 2010

SummerFun Classes for children and youth are your ticket to adventure! Please note grade levels refer to the grade your child will enter Fall 2010. SummerFun Classes require advance reservations. Fees are due at time of enrollment and are refundable up to one week prior to the first day of class. To register, please call the Hastings Museum at 1-800-508-4629 or fill out and mail this registration form. Fees: $30.00 members $35.00 non-members with the exception of Space Camp and Pioneer Family.

NEW!—The Ashley Kulwicki Scholarship is available for students who qualify for free and reduced lunch to participate in the Hastings Museum’s SummerFun program.  Scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.  Limit one class per child. Museum members will have priority for registration through March 15, 2010. Registration will then open to the general public on March 16.

New Volunteer Orientation (Grades 7 – Adult)

June 2, 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Sign-up Deadline: May 28

This is the last orientation session for new volunteers prior to summer activities. Please bring the following information with you: mailing address and telephone number, email address, emergency contact person, any medical conditions, and 3 references with contact information.

The next new volunteer orientation will be Saturday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m.

Museum Mentor

SummerFun Aide Training (Grades 7 – Adult)

June 2, 10:30-12:00 p.m.
Sign-up Deadline: May 28

This training is for volunteers who have had New Volunteer Orientation, but have not taken the SummerFun training in previous years. Attendance of this session is required prior to assisting in our SummerFun classes.

Prior to training, volunteers may sign up as an aide for a specific class. If they do not attend this training session, the position will be reassigned to a trained volunteer.


June 7-10

Barbie

Barbie Magic (Grades 1-5)

June 7-10, 9:30-11:30 a.m. (5/20)

Enter the magical world of Barbie in this enchanting class! Students will get to play dress up, have a Barbie tea party, experience Barbie's many careers, make their own Barbie clothes and go with Barbie to a luau. Kids are welcome to bring their Barbie stuff to class each day.

Creative Crafting (Grades 5 and above)

June 7-10, 9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. (5/20)
Sign-up Deadline: June 4

This isn't your little sister's craft class. Students get to experiment with paper making, tin, cork, fabric, spray paint, wood, sinew, and glass. They will create a bound book from scratch, book ends, message board and other cool things that will impress their friends and family.


June 14-17

Tylo the Terrible

Tylo the Terrible and His Dino Friends (Currently Ages 4-6)

June 14-17, 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. (5/20)

A time loop has caused us to go back 82 million years to a time when voracious reptiles dominated the skies and oceans. Students will meet the newest addition to the museum and learn about its life and other creatures living during the Cretaceous period. What happened at the end of this turbulent era and why did some animals survive while others became extinct? Stay close to your guide should you wish to survive the trip.

Pioneer Family

Pioneer Family (Grades 1-6)

June 14-17, 9:30-11:30 a.m. (10/30)

Are you adventurous? Are you brave? Would you have made a great pioneer? Find out as you experience the way of life on the Oregon Trail. Dress in period costumes and use real pioneer equipment. Camp, cook, create, play and explore the great outdoors. Don't forget your tennis shoes!

NOTE: This class will be held at Prairie Loft Center and children will need to be dropped off and picked up at this location.

Berenstain Bears Adventures

Berenstain Bears Adventures (Grades K-1)

Join Mama, Papa, Brother and Sister Bear in exploring the Hastings Museum. There are always lessons to be learned here and in Bear Country. We'll learn ways to be conscientious citizens as the Berenstain Bears stories take us throughout the museum and world.

I Spy

I Spy (Grades 2-4)

What will you spy with your little eye in our new summer exhibit I Spy? Will you see a piano or a miniature washing machine; a signed baseball or a really big boot? Each day will bring a new search and new objects for the students to explore.

Let’s Get Crafty

Let's Get Crafty (Grades K-1)

Travel the world through art. Sand paint as Native American and Tibetan monks have done for centuries. Combine the subtle colors of Asia's paper crafts with Renaissance Europe. Learn Afrikaner metalwork and catch the colors of sunshine throughout the world.

Space Camp

Have you ever seen a star fall from the sky? Does the Moon follow you when traveling in your car? Can we live on the moon? Discover the answer to these mysteries and others as you journey through the cosmos in the J. M. McDonald Planetarium.

Space Camp

Stars, black holes and chaos, oh my! Gravity got you down? It will be a busy and messy time as our young space explorers experiment with ways to overcome it and other space challenges. Explore technology with a behind-the-scene tour of the planetarium and discover how the night sky helps astronauts, sailors and wildlife.

Military Boot Camp

Military Boot Camp (Grades 3-6)

July 12-15, 9:30-11:30 a.m. (10/25)

Do you have what it takes to make it through boot camp? Join us this week to find out. Students will learn the history of America's wars and make care packages to send overseas to Nebraska's troops. Real Army men and women will be here to take you through boot camp and show you some of the equipment they train with. Wear your tennis shoes because you will be running!

Museum Mysteries

Museum Mysteries (Grades 4-6)

A murder was committed at the Hastings Museum and we need your investigative skills. The criminal left clues hidden in our new summer exhibit I Spy. Students will learn the tricks of the trade used by real detectives to find the murderer. Will you be able to outsmart the villain?

Batik

Foam-Free Fun (Grades 2-3)

July 19-22, 9:30-11:30 a.m. (5/20)
Sign-up Deadline: July 16

Self expression will run rampant as our young artists try different art techniques and mediums. Using natural and man-made materials, they will create keepsakes through metal etching, mosaics, string, and Kool-Aid batik.

Orion the Hunter

Star Heroes and Sky Beasts (Grades 4-6)

Come journey with us as we explore sky myths from around the world. Look at Orion the Hunter as he was seen by many cultures all around the globe. Learn the major constellations and their stories and then create your own sky myth! See how ancient mythology still influences us today in our super heroes, movies and language.

Natural Wonders

Natural Wonders (Grades 2-3)

July 26-29, 9:30-11:30 a.m. (5/20)

Fascinated by geology? Learn about the 7 Natural Wonders of the World and how they were created through geological forces and time. Students will watch the new Super Screen film Grand Canyon Adventure and discover how the Grand Canyon was formed. Learn how volcanoes are created and discover the beauty and wonder of the Great Barrier Reef.
