Area Museums Announce HolidayIMG_0941
“Food Fight!”
HASTINGS, Neb., Oct. 23, 2015 – The “Tri City Food Fight”, a food drive for the communities of Hastings, Grand Island, and Kearney, kicks off Monday, Nov. 30. The Hastings Museum, Stuhr Museum, the Archway, and the Nebraska Firefighters Museums are all taking part. The aim is that each organization collects as much canned food as possible for their local food pantries.
“It’s a lighthearted competition that puts a fun twist on giving back to three communities that give so much to us,” said Becky Matticks, director of the Hastings Museum. “Last year we won, and we’re still enjoying the bragging rights.”
The 2014 food drive raised just under 3,000 pounds of food, down from 2013’s results of 4,600 pounds. The Stuhr and Hastings Museum are pleased to welcome back the Archway and the Nebraska Firefighters Museum to the competition that runs through December. The 2015 goal is to surpass 5,000 pounds of donated food and grocery items.
The competition also raises awareness of the vital role food pantries play not only during the holidays, but all year long. All food gathered during the drive will benefit the Food Pantry in Hastings, the Salvation Army Food Pantry in Grand Island, and the Food Pantry in Kearney.
While canned foods are the most common items donated, numerous products are needed: peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and sauce, boxed potatoes of any variety, cereal, jello, tuna and hamburger helper mixes, soup, crackers, and pancake syrup and mix. Dish soap, bath soap, toilet tissue, and shampoo also can be donated.
Food donations to Stuhr Museum can be taken to the Stuhr Building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday and put in the sleigh outside the Stuhr Building. Food donated to the Hastings Museum can be dropped off 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1-6 p.m. on Sunday. The Archway is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Food donations in Kearney can be left at the Archway in the designated area, or at the Nebraska Firefighters Museum: open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday.
