Up Close: NOTGELD CURRENCY
Fri, April 14, 10-11am &
Sat, April 15, 11-Noon
From 1914-1923, Germany and Austria were issuing Notgeld because of inflation caused by the cost of World War I. Notgeld, also known as emergency or necessity money, was issued by an institution, without sanction by the central government, during a time of economic or political crisis. A mutually agreed upon form of payment, notgeld was often made of paper but could also be coins, leather, silk, linen, wood, and porcelain. Come learn more about the Museum’s notgeld collection. A program for ages 18-88 with special guest speaker for our collections staff Jessica Noyd.
